Why they are important

A data analyst is someone who disects raw information from data collected using data analysis tools to obtain results that will be helpful for clients in making important decisions. Responsibilities include:

  • Using data analysis software and tools to extract the relevant data. 
  • Carrying out initial analysis to assess the quality of the data.
  • Screening out irrelevant and / or corrupted data.
  • Data interpretation through further analysis to determine the meaning of the data. 
  • Final analysis and report preparation.
Basic Skills and Qualifications
Both university graduates and school leavers can enter the data analysis profession. Wherever you may be in your academic journey, it is important for you to have the following skills in order to pursue and succeed in the data analysis profession:
  • Good communication skills (active listening, verbal and written communication).
  • A high level of mathematical / statistical ability. 
  • Knowledge of or ability to quickly learn Programming languages, such as SQL, Oracle and Python.
  • The ability to analyse, model and interpret data using data analysis software like SPSS and tools like google analytics etc. 
  • Critical Thinking and Problem-solving skills. 
  • Planning and time management skills to meet deadlines. 
  • Attention to detail, precision and accuracy. 
  • Teamwork / interpersonal skills

You can work In-house or as a freelancer offering your services to:
  • Banks
  • Companies such as software Development companies, Telecommunications companies, Manufacturing companies etc.
  • Government, non-governmental and other public sector organisations
  • Social media specialists
  • Colleges / universities and individual academic researchers.
  • Pharmaceutical companies
  • Public, private and sole proprietorship businesses

How much you can earn per year
As a Data Analyst, you can earn anything between N120,000 to N1,500,000 per month depending on where in the world you get the job or the based on the quality and / or quantity of clients you work with if you are a freelancer.
